Starting a business is often a journey filled with surprises and challenges. For me, it all began 15 years ago in the most unexpected place: the hallway at the top of my stairs. With a love for nails and a dream to create a welcoming space for self-expression, I took the first steps toward building a nail business that would one day thrive as a popular high street salon.

The Humble Beginnings
In the early days, my makeshift salon was just a small table in my hallway. I had a few basic tools, a selection of vibrant nail polishes, and a strong determination to succeed. The thrill of welcoming my first clients, who were mostly friends and family, was unmatched. Each appointment helped me refine my skills and build my confidence.
The atmosphere was cozy, and I cherished the close connections I developed with my clients. They quickly became my biggest supporters, spreading the word about my services within our community. This experience taught me how vital a friendly environment is for clients needing a space to express themselves through creativity and nails. Over the first six months, I serviced about 50 clients, allowing me to understand their desires better and tailor my offerings accordingly.
Opening the High Street Salon
Just one year after starting in my hallway, I made a bold decision and opened my first high street salon. Inspired by the colorful styles of the 90s, I crafted a vibrant space that was not only functional but visually stunning. The walls were painted in lively colors, and the decor reflected the era that inspired my passion for nail art.
To my delight, the salon quickly became known for its unique atmosphere and outstanding service. I was thrilled to turn a profit in the first month—a clear indicator that the hard work and dedication I invested were paying off. Within three months, the number of clients had increased by 150%, allowing me to expand my service options and introduce new nail techniques. This kept my clients engaged and excited.
Training the Next Generation
As my business flourished, I felt a strong urge to give back to the community that had supported me. I began training work experience students and apprentices, sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for the nail industry. It was incredibly rewarding to watch these young talents refine their skills and develop their unique styles.
I created a supportive atmosphere where they could learn not just the technical aspects of nail care, but also the critical importance of customer service and building relationships with clients. Over the years, all of my apprentices have moved on to successful careers in the industry. I take pride in knowing I helped launch their journeys.
A Turning Point: Loss and Change
In 2020, my life changed dramatically when my partner passed away. This devastating loss impacted me deeply, both personally and professionally. The overwhelming grief made it challenging to focus on my business during such emotional turmoil.
To complicate matters, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the shutdown of my salon. The uncertainty was daunting, and I faced the tough task of keeping my business afloat while coping with my personal loss. This difficult period prompted me to reflect on my priorities and seek new ways to move forward.
A New Chapter: Motherhood and Personal Growth
In 2021, amid the challenges, I welcomed my beautiful daughter into the world. Becoming a mother instilled a renewed sense of purpose in my life. It also motivated me to rethink my career path and focus on personal development.
I decided to train as a trainer, creating course material aimed at helping others in the nail industry. This new direction allowed me to channel my experiences into something positive, enabling others to flourish in their journeys.
Alongside my training, I enrolled in a BA Hons degree in Creative Writing and Music, broadening my horizons. This academic pursuit has enriched my life, providing me with tools to express my creativity more effectively. Continuous learning is vital, and I am committed to personal growth as I embrace this new chapter.
The Importance of Community
Throughout my journey, I have recognized the significant role community plays in the nail industry. The connections I have established with fellow professionals, clients, and students have been invaluable. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes has fostered a supportive network that has guided me through my toughest times.
I've also experienced the benefits of collaboration in our industry. Working together allows us to elevate nail care standards and promote a culture of creativity. I take pride in being part of a community that values education and mentorship and look forward to continuing to contribute to its growth.
Looking Ahead: The Future of My Nail Business
Reflecting on my 15-year journey fills me with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped who I am today. From my humble beginnings in a hallway to a thriving high street salon, every step has taught me valuable lessons.
Looking ahead, I am eager about the future of my nail business. I plan to expand my training programs, offering workshops and courses tailored for aspiring nail technicians. My goal is to create a comprehensive curriculum that teaches not only technical skills but also the importance of creativity and self-expression.
Additionally, I hope to venture into developing my own line of nail products. This undertaking will allow me to blend my passion for nails with my creative writing skills, crafting engaging content that resonates with fellow nail enthusiasts.
Reflecting on the Journey
My journey in the nail industry has been filled with emotions, challenges, and victories. From starting in my hallway to opening a high street salon, I have learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. The loss of my partner and the impact of the pandemic forced me to reevaluate my priorities, leading me to embrace new growth opportunities.
As I continue to navigate this ever-changing landscape, I remain committed to empowering others through training and education. I believe that by sharing my knowledge and experiences, I can help shape the next generation of nail professionals.
Thank you for being a part of my journey. I look forward to what the future holds and am excited to continue sharing my passion for the nail industry with all of you.
